How To
How to rebuild 9" third member
We start by removing the third member from the axle and clean it for disassembly.
The third member is disassembled completely. Cleaned and checked for wear and broken parts.
We glass bead all parts that will be used over. We use new bearings, seal, ring gear and pinion set and in this case a new Detroit Locker.
We assemble the pinion into the pinion support. New bearing races pressed into the support housing. New bearings onto the new pinion. Crush sleeve, seal and yoke are installed. Nut is tightened to the proper torque to allow specified bearing preload.
Pinion assembly is installed into the third member housing with new o-ring and correct shim for proper pinion depth.
Install the new ring gear on the carrier. New side bearings are pressed on the carrier and installed into the case.  Cap bolts are torqued to proper specs. Side bearing adjusters are used to set proper backlash and bearing preload. Lapping paint shows proper gear mesh. Locking tabs are installed.
A coat of paint and the third member is ready for installation.
