Early Bronco Restoration - Bronco Connection LLC

We have been asked to put together a quick guide on hot to convert a 6 cyl Bronco to V8. We have the following pictures and narration to give you an idea what it will take to do the job so that the end result looks and performs better than stock.

We start with a 1970 Bronco with the stock 170 6 cylinder engine.

Our customer desired more power and better drivability so he decided to replace the 6 banger with a new 302 V8

He also requests a floor shifter for the manual transmission and wants us to replace the bench seat with a set of OEM bucket seats

The engine, transmission and transfer case are removed and the frame as well as undercarriage are cleaned.

The 6 cyl motor mounts will be cut off the frame and replaced with new V8 frame mounts

The engine and 6 cyl transmission are discarded for new V8 versions. We will rebuild the original transfer case while we have it out.

We use a bare V8 block, bell housing transmission housing and intermediate housing the ensure a proper fit. The rear cross member is retained in its original position. New V8 frame mounts are then positioned and marked.

Weld the mounts onto the frame

The core support for the 6 cylinder must be retrofitted for the much larger 3 core radiator. The 6 cyl rad mounts are removed and the opening enlarged 1 inch on each side. Upper and lower rad mount brackets are positioned and welded into place.

We install the new radiator to make sure the mounts are in the correct position.

The 6 cyl cable type throttle assembly will be replaced by a V8 throttle assembly

We have a 3 speed V8 transmission rebuilt. We also rebuilt the original T case and are ready to install.

We rebuild original Bronco 302 V8s to spec. This engine will have a mild "RV" cam for better response and low end power. Engine is bored .30 over with standard rods and mains. Meads are rebuilt to spec with new valves, seats and guides.

New dual plane intake manifold, Holly Truck Avenger carb and all other engine related parts are installed.

We now can install the rebuilt transmission and T case

We have installed a resurfaced flywheel, new clutch kit and V8 clutch bell crank assembly.

The new V8 throttle assembly is then install

Our new cooling system is installed

The floor is cut out and the floor shifter installed. Our new seats are also installed

Dual exhaust system is installed, V8 engine harness installed, oils and coolant filled. Started, tuned and test driven!

We have installed a new engine, transmission, transfer case that run great and will give new life to this Classic Bronco for years to come. In the process we have tried to accomplished the conversion so that from all accounts the Bronco was built with a V8.
